Staff from Dexter Food and Nutrition and the Farm to School Program have been busy this fall bringing fresh, local fruits and vegetables to all 6 Dexter School cafeterias. So far this year we have served 100 lbs. of fresh watermelon and 180 lbs. of roasted white and cheddar cauliflower from Ruhlig’s Produce, over 130 bushels of apples from Lesser Farm and The Frosty Apple and 25 lbs of purple and green cabbage from Hand Sown Farm and Laurel Livingston’s home garden.
I am always excited and amazed at how many of the students request not only additional amounts during lunch but also ask for the recipe to make what we offer at home. Because of this, we have updated the recipe page on the Dexter Farm to School website. There, you can find recipes to both the roasted cauliflower and apple slaw that was served as our Harvest of the Month options in October and November. I would encourage everyone to check out these simple and delicious recipes. It is always a wonderful time of the year to try new recipes and share those that are a tradition in your own family.
Please look for our Harvest of the Month options for December, including homemade apple crisp and roasted sweet potatoes, potatoes, and onions. All of the produce is fresh and sourced from local farms and orchards like Hand Sown Farm and The Frosty Apple.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
