We care about safe food. But we also care about our local farmers, food hubs, and processors that help us bring fresh, locally grown food into our schools. That’s why we’ll be joining our friends from Michigan Voices for Good Food Policy and the Washtenaw Food Policy Council at this upcoming event. #fixFSMA
Our School Gardens Need You
The Dexter Schools Garden Boosters is a group of parents, teachers, community members, and non-profit partners who have come together to support the school gardens district-wide. There are currently 4 school garden programs in Dexter schools, each at various stages of development. Each garden program currently has a point-person who serves on the Garden Boosters and can help new parents and community members looking to help with their school’s garden.
But these people cannot succeed alone.
If you are a parent or teacher who would like to get involved, email gardenboosters@gmail.com to hear about when the next meeting is or SIGN UP HERE to join us! We need YOU!
Local Root Veggies for November
This week and next, Dexter school cafeterias are featuring roasted root vegetables from two Michigan growers, as well as the Dexter-grown apples we’ve been getting in since September. Be sure to encourage students to try these veggies on the lunch line!
Dexter Food and Nutrition ordered beets, carrots, turnips, and parsnips grown on Victory Farms in Hudsonville, MI and red potatoes from Cedar Valley Packing in Grant, MI. Both came through Cherry Capital Foods.
Here’s what they flyers around the lunch room look like:
Kids at Creekside said that the root veggies added nice fall colors to their plates! . . . And with grapes and apples on the salad bar, as well, the fruits and veggies were looking very seasonal!
Creekside Garden – Fall Soup Supper Fundraiser!
The Creekside School Garden Program has had a lasting relationship with Zingerman’s Roadhouse Chef and farmer at Cornman Farms, Alex Young, for several years. Alex will be back at Creekside again this year to offer a beautiful soup supper, and celebrate the many successes of the garden program this year. Creekside’s garden program this year has expanded the number of students impacted by creating an after school garden club in addition to the Kitchen/Garden FLEX class, which was established last year. Proceeds from the event will benefit the garden program at Creekside. See the announcement and flyer below for more information on how to join us!
The annual Fall Soup Supper is coming! Funds raised go to the Creekside Intermediate School Garden program. Please join us for a fun, tasty, relaxing dinner! Tickets can be purchased by using the form below or online at: http://dexterschools.org/online-payments/payschools/

DHS Garden Week in the Cafeteria

Today, Ms. Melinsky’s 2nd hour class came out to the Sullivan Memorial Learning Garden to harvest produce to be used in the DHS cafeteria throughout this week! This project represents a pilot Garden to Cafeteria Program that will hopefully continue and grow as the garden itself grows. The kitchen staff were very impressed by the high quality of the parsley, swiss chard, arugula, lettuce, serrano peppers, and chives that DHS students planted, maintained, and harvested! The lettuce was served today on the salad bar, and the rest of the harvest will be featured throughout the remainder of this week.
The DHS Kitchen staff were wonderful supporters of this project! They made sure to put up signage and talked to students and teachers about the special school-grown produce on the lunch line. We hope that this event will help spread the word about the Sullivan Memorial Learning Garden at DHS, and generate more student interest in the garden.
Thank you to Dexter Food and Nutrition and to Ms. Melinsky’s 2nd Hour for making this all possible!
