It’s that time of the year when the anticipation of snow melting and longer days makes even the idea of spring cleaning sound exciting! Next week Creekside flex students will transition from the kitchen classroom and set up shop in the greenhouse. They will do some spring cleaning- scrubbing pots and trays, organizing seeds and soil, and writing new garden tags, all in preparation to grow over 2000 seeds for the upcoming Creekside Plant Sale Fundraiser. Our annual fundraiser will be held in conjunction with Dexter Green Days on Saturday May 18, 2019. All proceeds go directly to the Creekside Kitchen Garden Program. Please save the date!

Students will begin by learning the basics of soil composition and seed germination while planting several varieties of herbs. After spring break, students will continue with peppers, tomatoes and other vegetables like kale, broccoli, cauliflower and eggplant. Lastly they will plant cucumber, squash and pumpkin seeds. During this time, they will become true experts at planting, watering, and transplanting all varieties and types of veggies. They will also gain knowledge of health benefits and the importance of incorporating more vegetables into their own meals. After the plant sale, students will move out to the gardens to plant the Creekside Kitchen Garden and Sullivan Memorial Garden all located on Creekside School grounds.

This year, we have many customer favorites on our seed list- Sun Sugar cherry tomatoes, slicing cucumbers and watermelon. In addition, we have some tried and true varieties like Big Boy hybrid tomatoes and King Arthur green bell peppers. Students will also grow several varieties of heirloom tomatoes and basil just in case you are in the mood for a delicious Caprese salad come mid-July. Whatever your favorite vegetable variety may be, let’s all celebrate spring by planting seeds and supporting growing minds.

Enjoy!
