October is National Farm to School Month and we are celebrating!
Creekside Kitchen and Garden Flex Class
Students at Creekside have been busy picking raspberries, making pesto, and juicing carrots. Just this week students harvested over 50 lbs of carrots from the Creekside Kitchen Garden! Students had a mini-lesson on root vegetables that included harvesting, cleaning, processing, sampling and of course information on carrots undeniable nutritional benefits and deliciousness!
Garden to Cafeteria
So far this school year, students and the Farm to School Team have harvested over 400 lbs of produce from the Creekside Gardens. The Farm to School Team has sold over 150lbs of garden produce to the DCS cafeterias- the proceeds going directly to the Farm to School Program. Look for Frosty Orchard Apples, local cabbage, and Brussels sprouts this month.
Mill Creek Food’s Class
To kick off Farm to School Month, students in Mill Creek Food’s Class learned about healthy snacks by making kale-apple muffins. Typical comments from students were, “Wow, I didn’t think I would like this!” and “Can I have another?” You can find the recipe here.
Creekside Garden Work Day
We had a great turnout at the workday this past Saturday. Several Mill Creek CS&L students came to volunteer their time and made a lot of progress clearing out garden beds, composting green material and enjoying local cider. If you are interested in helping out, we are hosting another Fall Creekside Garden Workday on Saturday, October 28th from 10-12. Hope to see you there!
Enjoy!
